Helping at Concho Community Garden was an amazing experience in that it reminded me of home. Living in the city, one does not have the opportunity to step out side and admire nature. However at the garden we got to get our hands dirty and make Austin a little greener. While we did not plant anything during our time at the garden we were able to help clear the plots so that they would be ready for future use. We did away with the old by clearing out weeds and old lumber. This was done by creating three teams which included the weeders (those that did the weeding), the wood gathers (those who took old wood from the plots and organized them), and the fence builders who took the wood from the gathers and used it to build a fence around the garden. Three simple tasks helped make a huge difference since by the end the garden looked much more organized and clear than it had been.
I pulled weeds and helped to clear the ground. I enjoyed getting my hands dirty, working with the other volunteers, and being outside. Because I like nature and the environment, I consider it a great experience.
Although it was really cold and wet, it was nice to be outside and help someone with something they were really passionate about. I got a chance to talk to the director and find out why she did it and it her reasons were cool.
I love helping out when it comes to planting trees, plants, shoveling dirt or fixing up a garden but I have to say I wasn't to pleased with this event. They didn't really show us what to do, so I was lost half the time. Maybe it was the cold weather or the fact that I was getting way too dirty, but overall I had fun working with my ULN group and fixing up that garden.
