As Mister Honors, I had the privilege of collaborating with Operation Dream and partnering with Mister and Miss A&T to host the Honors Dream event at Simkins Elementary. This experience allowed us to pour into young students by introducing them to a variety of potential careers and educational pathways. We spent time talking with the children about their dreams for the future, encouraging them to think boldly about life after graduation. After our discussion, the students were able to express their aspirations creatively by painting and coloring pages featuring different occupations.
For our final Out of the Garden service, we handed out food to families as they pulled up in their cars. I’m grateful to have helped and seen the impact firsthand.
Visiting the Mack Farm with Lewis Gives was a great experience. We planted vegetables, did some cropping, and even fished. It was nice meeting Nicole Lewis, the founder of Lewis Gives, and seeing the cows up close. I had a great time giving back and connecting with others.
The Survival of the Fittest Honors event was a dynamic experience that emphasized the importance of physical and mental well-being for young men. Through racing games, we encouraged exercise and teamwork while also educating participants about Black historical figures who contributed to medical and fitness wellness. This blend of activity and education made for an engaging and impactful event, reinforcing the value of a strong body and mind.
Volunteering for the morning session of Honors interviews was a rewarding experience. Ranking prospective scholars required careful evaluation of their responses, leadership potential, and fit for the program. Seeing their passion and ambition reminded me of the importance of mentorship and community. This experience sharpened my decision-making skills and reinforced my commitment to supporting future Honors scholars.
