Today, I came later in the evening and got the chance to just sit and talk with the older adults and listen to music. I assisted with clean up during pick-up hours and had a great time talking.
On this day, I came later in the afternoon and assisted with snack time. I had the chance to help pass out snacks/clean-up and sit with the clients and talk. This was a great day and gave me the opportunity to learn more about the clients at McCoy and their background.
What do you like most about this experience?
Today I spent the day participating in one the adult music classes. The instructor brough her guitar and we did movements to the music. Along with this we also sang hymn songs and jammed to music. I also helped some of the adults color and got the chance to talk to them. McCoy also had a little birthday party for the clients who had a birthday in April.
What was the most challenging?
Today was a smooth day and I didn't really have any challenges.
What was your key takeaway from this day?
This day was relatively an easy and fun day. I look forward to volunteering some more.
Today, I participated in a group exercise where we would call out a movement and we all would do the movement as a group to stretch out our bodies and get a little bit of stretching. Overall, it was a fun activity. Once we were done with the group exercise I helped a few people with coloring. Since Easter is coming up, they were coloring easter eggs and tomorrow they plan to turn them into paper Easter baskets. It was a cute activity to celebrate the holiday.
Today, I had the chance to participate in one of McCoy's exercise classes. The person leading the class made it fun and inviting. She played the song "My Girl" by the Temptations and loved that I knew the song even though I'm only 23. She joked that she was amazed that the song is timeless and will always be something young people can relate with older adults about through music. My key takeaway from this day was that we are all young in our hearts. Overall, it was a great day at The McCoy Center
So far my experience with The McCoy Day Care was very interesting and fun. On this day I assisted with a few activities such as coloring, word puzzles, word activities, and a Valentine's Day photo shoot. Rachel, Janessa, and I created a "What is your best advice for someone on Valentine's Day" board. We had the adults come up and give their relationship advice and we took their photo. It was very cute and fun to hear about what advice they gave.
The most challenging was to be a new environment. I was nervous but everyone at The McCoy center are very welcoming and let us know what activities they have planned.
My takeaway from this day was that some of the clients at The McCoy Day Care are very sweet and funny. Their advice really had me cracking up and I loved to hear it. Overall, I can't wait to continue volunteering throughout this semester.
On this day, I got the chance to train with the McCoy Adult Day Care. The training consisted of using virtual reality headsets to experience the day-to-day life of what a person with dementia may experience. It was really interesting and opened my eyes to how simple things may be confusing for a person who struggles with dementia. Overall, I can't wait to learn more through my volunteering!
