Misty Hollow Open Projects

This is an ongoing opportunity for those interested in developing a project or doing research on the property of Misty Hollow. This opportunity can be in many forms, and works best for those in the Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Engineering and Environmental Studies.  Here are some examples: 

• Lab based work and data collection on invasives, erosion, water quality, horticulture, flora and fauna, forest health
• Creative project based development of an artifact like an eco-sculpture or ephemeral like a musical performance, etc. All artifacts remain on the property 
• Project based work or labor on trailblazing, erosion control, forest management
• Engineering projects to aid in the development of small bridges made from the surrounding resources, water run off management, shelters made from sustainable materials, etc
• Work to help in the coordination and labor of events for "project reveals." These events may also be online 
• Artists and those working in the humanities who want to practice in work about climate change, spiritual connection to land, placemaking, etc
• Collaborative cross disciplinary projects
• Work to help the visiting artist 

The opportunity is available throughout the seasons

• Late fall, winter and early spring are great for doing any manual labor type work in the forest, like digging and clearing
• Spring and fall the Misty Hollow springs and stream are full and flowing
• The summer and fall are beautiful with lush greenery and low water flow 

Things to know

• The property is a little wild. There are a few trails, but it is not like a park. The trails are very steep and strenuous, and most of the property does not get phone reception. This means that if you have a heart condition, or are not able to walk up stairs, you will not be able to access the property
• Getting to Misty Hollow requires a car, four wheel drive is preferable but not required. The private drive is one mile long, single lane, and steeply winds down to the private residence and office of Misty Hollow at 692 Bubb Lane, the second to the last house on the lane
• The neighbors use their land for hunting, mainly during the season. Misty Hollow is a no hunting property
• We have a good relationship with all of our neighbors and they are friendly. We share a border with the Monastery, and have permission to walk their trails.  (https://www.orthodoxmonasteryellwoodcity.org/)
