AA vs AS vs AAS Degrees (Academic Wellness - Mini-Session)

This mini-session went through the differences between AA, AS, and AAS. The presenters also went over what different careers each type of degree can lead to, where AA can lead to liberal arts careers, AS can lead to careers in scientific fields, and AAS can lead to more immediate careers.

    Refresh Session (5th Session)

I attended this event again since I wrote my impact a day late for the last one and am not sure if I got credit for attending, so I am rewriting this reflection.
This event was about going over the various key points of succeeding in keeping our scholarships, including our 15 hour requirements and our gpa limits. There were also new things worth mentioning, such as how field trips will only count for 5 hours going forward, and that doing more field trips will not count.

There were also some new rules or reminders introduced, such as a cap on how many field trip hours we can submit at a time.

The last and final event I attended today was the "STEM Collegian Center: Let's Succeed Together" presentation for STEM week. The presenter was Tracy Ring, a coordinator for the college's STEM Collegian Center. She first introduced herself and gave her background and past experiences to us, as well as going over the concept of student organizations. She then told us about what workshops and conferences the STEM Collegian Center offered and explained to us the benefits of joining. This was an extremely informative presentation, and has me considering if I should join.

The first event of today that I attended was the "Intro to Programming, Using Java" presentation for STEM week. The presenter for today was Homer Sharafi, who also happens to be my professor for INT-1111. The presentation consisted of a brief summary of types of software (Application and System), low or high level languages, compilers, and interpreters. He showed us a desktop program called "JGrasp" where we can develop Java programs, then showed us how developing a program in Java typically goes. Since I am a Computer Science major, I noticed a lot of similar basic concepts I've learned in my classes, such as operators, variables, and exceptions Apart from this I also learnt new concepts such as classes. Overall, this was a very informative session (similar to a lecture), and since this relates to a class I have to take in the future, this will give me an edge in my learning.

The event I attended today is the "AI Security" presentation for STEM week, presented by Meerim Musabaeva. The recurring theme in this even was how AI automation has had an impact on present day Cybersecurity roles and measures. From what the presenter went over, it seems that AI will create new specialized roles and productivity will see a great increase because of it. She also went over the many parts AI assists with in the many fields of Cybersecurity, especially with big developments in AI like Anthropic's most recent Claude Mythos model. After this, she went through different ideas for hands-on practice, learning, independent project ideas, essential skills, and ways to build a portfolio. Although I tend to not use AI unless absolutely necessary for ethical reasons, I found the presentation insightful in AI's usage in Cybersecurity.

Today's event was the "Breaking Into Things and Other Ways to Work in Information Security" presentation for STEM week. The presenter was Tracy Maleeff, and she went over the portrayal of cybersecurity in fiction and real life examples. She also talked about common stereotypes there are when talking about Information Security compared to the reality of working in the field. She then spoke about the umbrella term of Info Sec and the fields under the term, as well as job examples and some big names in Info Sec. She used analogies (such as comparing a Chef to a Cloud Security Architect) to better explain to us the many different roles available. Overall, this was an informative session that helped give me insight on what is available to me in Information Security, and I found it really interesting.

The event I attended was the "Careers in Technology" presentation, which is part of the college's STEM week. The presentation was led by professionals, and they went over common questions, such as what benefits internships provide, the significance of building a portfolio, and what recruiters look for in an interview. They also went over which careers are growing more, what careers are impacted by the rise of AI, and how to adapt to job changes. There was an emphasis especially on mentorship and finding a mentor to help build skills.
