Sukumar Muthusamy

During this service trip to Knoxville, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM), contributing to multiple activities including facility maintenance, logistics support, and direct service. I assisted with assembling furniture, unloading and organizing supplies, and supporting operations at KARM stores, all of which contribute to sustaining community programs.

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was participating in daily service interactions and evening reflection sessions. These helped me better understand the complexity of homelessness, including factors such as mental health, addiction, and systemic challenges, rather than viewing it from a single perspective.

This experience strengthened my appreciation for teamwork, adaptability, and service-driven work. It also gave me insight into the scale of coordination required to support communities effectively. Overall, the trip was both humbling and impactful, reinforcing the importance of contributing time and effort toward meaningful causes.

The volunteer event at St. Lutheran Church have been a well-organized and positive experience for the participants. The teamwork fostered by the helpful individuals and supportive student volunteers was a key factor in the successful completion of the cleaning tasks. This experience highlights the significant impact of a supportive and collaborative environment in volunteer work. Even seemingly less glamorous tasks like cleaning can become enjoyable and productive when people work together effectively. Continuing to cultivate this kind of inclusive and collaborative environment will likely lead to more successful and enjoyable volunteer experiences in the future.

Review & Reflection:
This past week of volunteering has been an incredible experience for me. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I had the opportunity to engage with amazing people, learn new things, and contribute in a meaningful way to the society. I truly appreciate how welcoming and supportive everyone has been, making it easier for me to adapt and feel included.

As someone who has been in the U.S. for less than three months, this experience also helped me to understand cultural differences and improve my communication. While I may have unknowingly done things differently due to my background, I truly appreciate everyone's patience and openness.

The organization of the event was excellent, and I truly appreciate the efforts of the organizers (William and Myah) in making it a smooth and enriching experience for all of us. The collaborative environment made it easy to contribute and grow.
