Augie Ballantine

During my time volunteering at Night to Shine 2026, I helped create a welcoming and enjoyable prom experience for individuals with special needs. My responsibilities included assisting guests as they arrived, helping guide them through different activities, and making sure everyone felt comfortable and included. I also spent time interacting directly with participants by dancing, talking, and encouraging them to enjoy the night.
One of the biggest things I noticed was how important teamwork was among the volunteers. Everyone worked together to solve problems quickly, whether it was helping a guest find their group or adjusting plans to make sure everyone was having a good experience. Communication was constant, and it showed how effective collaboration can create a positive environment.
This experience connected strongly to my personal values of inclusion and respect. It reminded me of the importance of treating everyone with dignity and making sure people feel valued. I also gained a better understanding of the mission behind the event, which is to celebrate individuals with special needs and give them a night where they feel special and appreciated.
Overall, this experience showed me how meaningful service can be and how leadership in a business or organization often starts with empathy, communication, and teamwork.
