My journey reflects a commitment to community service, advocacy, and mental health support.
My interest in mental health began during the COVID lockdown, a challenging period that highlighted the importance of social-emotional wellness. Witnessing the mental health struggles of my friends and community members, I realized the critical need for support systems that address psychological well-being. This realization ignited my passion for psychology and my determination to contribute to mental health destigmatization and support.
As an athlete, I have faced significant physical challenges, including severe injuries that required multiple surgeries and extensive physical therapy. These experiences taught me resilience and the importance of mental fortitude. I worked with a physical therapist for my physical healing, and I worked on various mindfulness strategies to support my mental wellness. They also deepened my understanding of the psychological aspects of recovery and the need for serious support from individuals who have faced similar challenges. My personal journey through physical and mental recovery has fueled my desire to help others navigate their mental health and find their strength.
Muhammad Ali said, "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth." My dedication to community service is evident through my involvement in various organizations and initiatives, and I plan to continue to pay my rent As a Boy Scout, my Eagle Scout project focused on increasing literacy at a school in Ghana. Witnessing the lack of access to educational resources when I traveled to Ghana with my Kappa League brothers, I became motivated to collect books and raise funds to ship them, advocating for educational equity and the power of literacy. This project not only impacts the lives of children in Ghana but also reinforces my commitment to making a difference through service and has taught me about the impact of dedicated service.
Attending Morehouse College to study psychology aligns with my goals of supporting mental health and fostering a supportive environment for individuals facing psychological challenges. Morehouse's rich history of producing influential leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., inspires me to strive for excellence and social justice. I am eager to join a community of scholars dedicated to creating positive change and to further develop my skills and knowledge in psychology.
My ambition is to use my education and experience to establish programs that provide mental health support and advocacy, particularly for underserved communities. I believe that by addressing mental health issues and reducing stigma, we can create a healthier, more compassionate society where my community has an opportunity to thrive. My personal beliefs in resilience, service, and the power of education will guide me in achieving my professional passion.
Receiving this scholarship will help me realize my aspirations.
