Let's Get LinkedIn Workshop with Doyne Payne
Discussed the proper way to set up a LinkedIn account and what it could be used for. LinkedIn is primarily used to connect with recruiters to find jobs and build mutual connections through networking. Your LinkedIn should feature an appropriate profile picture, and the banner should represent something in which you specialize. Keep your profile updated by adding information about your education, work, and volunteer experiences. This lasted from 12 P.M to 1 P.M.
Discussed plans to turn PGCC into a 4-year university
Upcoming End of Semester and Graduation events
Learned about the candidates for the forthcoming election
This was an event hosted by the TRiO Support Services and we learned about financial literacy. The main thing I learned was how to properly budget and save. I needed that session a lot as I just got a credit card and wanted to start making a spending plan for my next upcoming pays. While I do know how to save, I don't how to properly create a plan on what I use the rest of my money with. Usually, I am left with nothing before my next check and I do need to change that. I appreciated this info session a lot and learned so much more about credit scores and history too.
A key point I took from the presentation was to not strive for "perfection" while it is hard for me because I don't want to fail, allowing yourself to fail will allow growth. If we were perfect all the time, then we aren't growing.
Another point was how social media has made it easy people, of all ages really, to be quick to compare ourselves with people online. People also idolize many content creators because they believe they're their standard and want to be like them knowing they aren't perfect themselves. I believe we shouldn't idolize people but appreciate that they are human and have had setbacks that got them to where they are today.
On the photo I attached at the bottom it says that seeking help is a sign of strength no weakness. While I struggle to ask for help no matter what it is, I do heavily agree. Overall this experience was nice and learned a lot as well!
I learned about the various leaders in PGCC, such as the CAB and SGA presidents. I was able to hear about plans for the college's future and how these changes will be implemented. I also discovered that the majority of the college's faculty are female. It was also great hearing about the different events that will be held during the semester as well. Overall, the town hall was very informative and helped a lot to get to know the people who in charge of certain areas.
I learned how to find my advisor through Navigate (my advisor is Angela McPherson). We discussed the different types of progress reports and their purposes. The speaker was articulate and provided valuable information for those wondering how to use Navigate. Another topic covered was the difference between dropping a class and withdrawing from one. Dropping a class means you remove it from your schedule before it starts, so it won't appear on your transcript. Withdrawing from a class indicates that you attended the course and later removed it from your schedule. This will show up on your transcript as a W, which could affect your financial aid.
Learned the process about applying for internship while at pgcc, when you should start looking and how to set up a College Central Network account to apply for those internships. We also discussed the do's and don'ts while working under a host site for the internship. This information was helpful and will pass it down to others looking for an internship for the Summer and/or Fall semesters
Discussed the program and its requirements for staying in the W.O.W program, one of which is attending three virtual, in-person, or hybrid workshops. We also heard from a alumni of the program and how WOW shaped her and her career.
