Within the two hour time span, I was able to completely fill an entire bucket with trash found along the dunes and park area of Crandon Park Beach in Key Biscayne. Insane how much impact could be made in such a short time frame. I also surprisingly found a charger cord in the sand... I don't think this is what they meant by relax and recharge.

After ripping out the invasive Beach Naupaka plant with Frost Science MUVE volunteers the day prior, I returned to Virginia Key Beach to help Coast Love plant Sea oat grasses and Bay cedar plants to take it's place. We had to plant the pods two by two in order for them to have a higher chance of survival and grow. Rooting for the little guys! (Pun 100% intended)
This volunteer opportunity was not for the weak! Together with fellow MUVE volunteers, we tackled the massive assignment of hacking away at the invasive Beach Naupaka plant that has planted roots (literally...) and made it's home along the dunes of Virginia Key Beach. Hauling all of the cut off branches was another journey on it's own, but the delicious empanadas provided afterwards was well worth the hard work!
Being able to work alongside the Girls Scouts of Camp Choee to help aid in the biodiversity restoration of their campsite was an experience I pleasantly enjoyed. Our lead, James Duncan, is truly a visionary in what he does. The environmental planning he has done and the goals he continues to achieve was very inspiring to hear as he gave us a nature walk tour of the campsite, showing off the results of previous restoration projects with the evidence of rare fauna scattered across the forest floor. I will gladly be returning to continue helping out with this cause, especially if they plan on giving us those delicious tacos again!
The experience Miami Waterkeeper provided during their Kayak Clean Up was beyond anything I could have imagined. I have never been kayaking before so our journey to Willis Island was perfect for a beginner like me. I was astonished by just how much trash could be accumulated on such a tiny island but we got put to work to get the job done. The appetizers providing by Gramps Getaway afterwards were phenomenal and I can't wait to join the next one!
