Impacts
Volunteering at Blazer Kitchen helped me gain a deeper understanding of the University of Alabama at Birmingham community and the struggles people face with food insecurity. I witnessed firsthand the importance of access to food and its significant impact on people’s daily lives. This experience allowed me to connect what I am learning in my major to real issues in the community. I also practiced communication skills by talking with individuals as they picked up food and by working with other volunteers. Collaborating with others to clean, organize, and distribute food demonstrated to me the importance of teamwork in serving the community effectively.
My experience at Big Brothers Big Sisters was very positive and rewarding. During my time there, I had the opportunity to interview two girls who were applying for the mentorship program. Both candidates were thoughtful, articulate, and well-educated, which made a strong impression on me. It was inspiring to see how motivated and self-aware they were, especially at such a young age. The interviews not only allowed me to practice my communication and professional skills, but also deepened my understanding of the impact that mentoring relationships can have on youth development. This experience reaffirmed the importance of community-based programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters in providing support, guidance, and positive role models for young people.
I went to middle school and watch a match meeting go on, as well as observed how to professionally deal with conflict within a social work setting.
I filled out some information on matchforce as well as talk to a girl called Shante at Glen Iris. It was fun and a good experience this test out social work.
I enjoyed it. I tutored a second grader that was kind of struggling and all subjects. I do think that he would benefit from being a part of speech or possibly being tested for dyslexia. We read a book about babies and wrote all our numbers and counted to 100..
I really enjoyed this experience. We went to the high school and picked up the “Bigs” and then went to the elementary to the “Littles” And gave them a activity where they were supposed to draw out or write out with their positive experiences that they’ve had throughout their life and key points. Then we also handed out snacks and boardgames and let the big and Littles interact and bond. I think I had some very good interactions with the bags and Littles and really enjoyed the experience.
I really enjoyed this experience. I worked with a third-grade boy with his multiplication tables, reading, and a bit of writing. We did a couple of worksheets during multiplication of 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, and 11. We also discussed a bit of division, but not in depth. Then we read a book about King Kong and half of a SpongeBob book. We also discussed things he liked at school and things he didn’t and drew a picture from the King Kong book to clarify that he knew what he read. The Big Brother Big Sister staff were very friendly and helpful if I needed assistance. 10/10
