It was good and chill. I was instructed on how to bag produce and where to store them. Everyone I met was super helpful.
I came in expecting to serve bagged lunches, which I did, but I didn’t know how much judgment I’d have to use because I was instructed to give no more than two bags away. An hour went by and I was reprimanded by the security guard not to give that much away because people will say they have siblings and other children that need one. I didn’t want to deprive anyone of anything so I gave it to them and sometimes I gave them extra. He wanted them to have proof of any sibling or child because the bags are limited, but this is done daily so that didn’t make sense to me. I had 2-4 bags left over at the end of it and I would say I was frustrated because of the limits but I’m glad peoples’ needs were met despite the limitations. I could understand the “one bag per person” rule if there was a line of people but it wasn’t so I didn’t think it was necessary to subject them to just one bag. I do want to thank the two men that did help and reassure me that it was to my personal discretion the proper distribution of the bags. That eased my frustrations a bit. I’m confident that I will not be returning to volunteer here again. Although, I do appreciate what the Community Lunch Program is doing for this community.
Everything was great!
I had another great time at the Food Mission at St. Vincent de Paul. I’ve met more cool people and ran into some of the same people I volunteered with the first time I attended in January. I’m making it an effort to carve out time to help out with this particular food mission and hopefully branch out to others. Overall, it was still a great experience.
I had a good time at the Food Mission. Initially, I was pretty nervous going in by myself but Chef Eliot and some of the other volunteers were very helpful and patient. There was always a task to complete and it wasn’t too crowded. I could definitely see myself volunteering here again in the near future. I love the work and the impact it is making on those who are usually forgotten about. I felt satisfied and accomplished in the end.
