The people running the event were very caring and it was a pleasure working with them to serve the RBJ residents. A very positive feeling all around and a great way to experience service first hand.

For my service I participated in volunteering for the 2014 Engineering EXPO. This is the largest student-run career fair in the country and brings in many industrial giants to meet and recruit engineering students. I volunteered to help with whatever I could and was placed into the job of signing in students by giving them a name tag. This job may not seem too important but it is important to remember that many people attend this fair. When the buses brought more students from campus to the fair there were waves and waves of people lining up to get their name tags. While the buses looped back though I was able to meet other volunteers and talk to them. It was a good way of meeting others and also experiencing the type of management it takes to run this EXPO. It was a good experience. I felt that it prepared me by exposing me to a greater level of organization. Being a part of this well-oiled machine showed me that every person’s job is important. While signing people in at large events is not my passion, I still see the importance of the job and can appreciate all forms of volunteering a lot more. When I attended the career fair as a student and not a volunteer I was surprised by how smoothly things were running. I wasn’t waiting in line for too long and was able to grab my name tag and go talk to the different representatives who showed up. If I needed help all I had to do was ask someone in a volunteer shirt. Don’t know where the bathroom is? Someone volunteering does. Not sure about the layout of the event? Ask to have a map. All of this didn’t strike me as surprising at first but being in the shoes of the volunteers later that day helped me to understand how the entire event was possible due to all of the volunteers. Working on the inside lets you see just how important every single job is and how much of an impact one person can have in the grand scheme of things. For my next volunteer service I will be sure to keep this in mind. I will be able to better understand my place in the bigger picture of things and will be able to connect to those people who keep our world running smoothly.

Thank you for giving us your time, Jacier. We hope to see you again!
