I volunteered at the Micah 6 Food Pantry in Austin on Saturday morning. I was a re-stocker and helped organize food in the food pantry. My group was in charge of removing produce from the packaging and placing it on the self in an organized way. We also had to be sure to through away any rotten fruit. This experience allowed me to meet other seniors also volunteering and build a relationship that way. I also got to see how lucky we are to be able to afford fresh produce.

I volunteered to help clean Gracepoint Austin Church in Austin one Saturday morning. The church is located on the corner of 22nd and San Antonio. We were in charge of cleaning the kitchen, lobby, and multipurpose room. I was in charge of cleaning all of the door handles and windows. I was surprised, as i never would have imagined that door handles need to be cleaned. I was able to get a lot of work done with the help of my fellow volunteers. Overall this was a positive experience and I learned about the value of teamwork (a lot of people doing a little can really get work done fast!)

I volunteered with Gracepoint Austin Church in their building of a gym for the Longhorn Lodge retreat site. My group of volunteers were put in charge of installing the toilets for the downstairs bathroom area. It was a lot of fun as we had to learn how toilets worked and how to install them. It took a while to find the proper tools and screws for all of the parts. I felt super accomplished when we finished and flushed the toilet for the first time.

Enjoyed volunteering for Explore UT 2016. As a volunteer check-in, I was able to distribute lunches to volunteers and inform them of resources. I also had a good time at the check-in table with other staff members from my department. We greeted parents, students groups, and future longhorns as well as gave them directions and instructions for all the activities at Explore UT.

Had a wonderful time at Introduce a Girl to Engineering day. It was hot outside as we showed girls from elementary and middle schools how to build straw rockets. We proposed designs to them and encouraged them to use the scientific method when testing out their creations.

Young engineers and scientist day (YES day) at UT was hosted by Pi Sigma Pi, Society of professional Hispanic engineers, and the national society of black engineers. Middle schoolers from the Austin area came to learn fun engineering activities and listen to a panel of students to share their experiences at UT. As volunteers, we helped supervise and run activities.
