I volunteered for two sessions this day. For the first I was the horse leader of Abby and the rider was one of my classmates. I felt quite confident after last week's horse leader training session. For the second session, I led Abby with a client on her. I was nervous at first, because I was in control of the horse with a real Courage client, but Jessie reassured me and the hour flew by. By the end, I felt very comfortable and accomplished!
Today I learned how to tack and lead a horse. I was introduced to leading last week, but this week I did it the entire session. This week included leading through obstacle courses designed by the client.
Going to Corral Coaching and Counseling was such an amazing experience! I learned so much about horses and how each facet of them can help humans. The hands-on learning was so helpful and made me appreciate the horses even more.
Today's client comes to Courage TRC as a confidence builder, so her session was spent as the teacher. She taught us how to brush, tack, ride, and lead a horse. I rode and lead Dolly.
For today's lesson Jessie had the client teach us how to brush a horse before putting a saddle on her and how to groom her after the lesson. I rode a horse today for the first time in about 12 years, so that will definitely go into my class PowerPoint.
We practiced going around barrels with the child. We tried to introduce a pool noodle to the horse, Lucky, and he tensed up and did a few circles. So, when we were done with the lesson, Ms. Karen reintroduced the noodle to Lucky.
I learned how to judge the movement of a horse and what type of client would fit that movement. I also learned how Courage decides what makes a good therapeutic riding horse.
