    Community Service for Biology Students

This was my third time visiting the Food Bank, and I think it was the best session yet. I spent my time initially making boxes as usual, but then I got to get an inside look at what it was like to pack the boxes of food that were shipped out to the people in need aged 55 and up. Because these specific boxes were for older people, we had to make sure they were receiving a good number of macronutrient-dense foods for health purposes. It was so heartwarming to pack the food into boxes, knowing they were getting out to places and people in need! The staff were so helpful and worked efficiently so we could fill over 100 boxes in just an hour. Such great people and an even better experience.

I visited the Food Bank for the 2nd time on the 7th and had an amazing time! It was a Garden demonstration, so we worked outside and tended to the vegetables. It was interesting to see how the crops internalized solar energy and strengthened themselves in return. I felt very connected to the earth while maintaining the garden and tending the pathways. Everyone there was super helpful and guided me the whole time. If you want to get your hands dirty or spend time helping the community, stop by!

    Capitol Area Food Bank

Today I visited the Capitol Area Food Bank. We started by building boxes to package meals for families and people in need. Then we went through cans to see if they were past their date and put them into storage bins to be used when packing boxes for individuals. Making sure these macronutrient-dense foods were properly stored, I was surrounded by amazing individuals, and I felt a deep sense of connection to the community. I'll definitely be back!
