Today at the Room in the Inn I plated food, cleaned the counters, and help with dishes. I developed stronger communication, especially while interacting with guests. Serving at Room in the Inn deepened my understanding of homelessness. I realized how easily someone can fall through the cracks and how crucial community-based support systems are for recovery and stability. I worked with other volunteers which made the environment feel more welcoming and it showed how effective we are when we’re working together toward a shared mission. By helping with meals, I was directly supporting their goal. I love everyone at the Room in the Inn. I always love volunteering here and I do not plan on stopping!
Volunteering at Room in the Inn helped me grow in communication and empathy. I learned how to better connect with people by listening and being present, and I also improved my ability to stay organized during busy moments like setting up sleeping areas or serving meals. This experience opened my eyes to the realities of homelessness—many of the guests were just going through tough times and trying to get back on their feet, which challenged the way I used to think about it. I worked as part of a team, and that made a huge difference. We all supported each other to make sure everything ran smoothly, and I saw how teamwork creates a positive, welcoming environment. I feel like I contributed to Room in the Inn’s mission by offering kindness, respect, and a sense of dignity to the guests. One challenge I faced was knowing how to start conversations with people I didn’t know, but I found that just being genuine and starting with small talk helped break the ice. Overall, this experience matched my values and reminded me that I want a future career where I can help others, work with a team, and make a meaningful impact in the community.
What skills did you develop or improve through this service experience?
I improved my communication and collaboration skills by working alongside a new church group. Since we hadn’t worked together before, it required clear communication to make sure everything flowed smoothly. I learned how to quickly build rapport, delegate tasks respectfully, and adjust to different working styles while still staying focused on the shared goal of serving the community.
What did you learn about the community or environment you served?
I learned that the need for support in our community is constant and widespread. Even though this was my fourth time serving, I continued to meet new families and individuals facing hardships. It emphasized just how important consistency is in service, people rely on these meals and the sense of community that comes with them.
Did you work individually or as part of a team, and how did that impact your experience?
I worked as part of a blended team that included both students and members of the church group. This made the experience feel even more connected. Seeing people from different backgrounds come together with a shared purpose was powerful. It also reminded me that teamwork is about fostering unity, support, and compassion.
How did your service contribute to the mission or goals of the organization?
By working together to serve a high volume of meals efficiently and with care, we helped Room in the Inn continue its mission of providing not only nourishment but dignity to those experiencing homelessness. Our partnership with the church group also strengthened the organization’s network of support, making future collaborations even more likely and effective.
What would you change about your approach to this service opportunity in the future?
In the future, I’d like to arrive a bit earlier to help with prep and coordination, especially when collaborating with new volunteers. I’ve seen how helpful it is to start with a short huddle to go over roles, expectations, and the game plan. That extra step could make our service even smoother and more impactful for the guests we’re there to support.
