I volunteered at the Canopy afterschool program as a driver and peer mentor. I picked up the children and drove them to the program, and we carved pumpkins for Halloween! I love volunteering at Canopy because it gives me an opportunity to learn about different cultures and have a fun time doing it! The kids really enjoyed this activity, and I loved being able to help them express their creativity!
This week we spent a lot of time outside playing soccer and volleyball. We did a brief art activity with the kids outside. As always, it made my week brighter!
Being a Canopy Afterschool Program volunteer still stands as one of the most fulfilling roles I have taken on as a college student. Yesterday we spent most of our time outside, playing soccer, drawing with chalk, and meeting new kids in the program! I am so eager to see what the rest of the semester holds for the kids of Canopy.
On Thursday, we spent half of the time playing soccer outside with the kids, and the other half was spent making art for their upcoming art show. This remains my favorite volunteer opportunity due to the staff and kids!
During my time volunteering with the Canopy Refugee Assistance Center's Afterschool Program, I supported refugee students by guiding them through arts and crafts activities that encouraged creativity and engagement. While language barriers were present, we used translation apps and technology to communicate and teach one another, which helped build trust and foster meaningful relationships. In addition to working with students during the program, I also provided them with safe and reliable transportation from the Canopy Center to their homes, ensuring they had consistent access to educational support and a welcoming community environment.
