The meeting helped change my perspective on things in terms of how to navigate life in college and eventually outside of it. Learning the characteristics of very influential people and looking at our own helps bring a different perspective on ourselves. It helps us take notes of ourselves and helps in seeing those characteristics shine in certain career paths or even day-to-day activities.
In this first scholarship session of the 2024 semester, I learned about dominance, influence, steadiness, conscientiousness, building resilience, understanding mentorship, identifying leadership styles, exploring multifaceted talents, promoting campus involvement, and curating the collegiate experience from the guest presenter Venessa McKinney (program manager) of the student leadership and engagement (SEAL). There were also important announcements from the Promise Scholarship coordinators and the Promise Scholarship program manager. What I took from this session is that leadership is about influence, not position. Also, through mentorship, I can meet my belongingness and esteem needs, building confidence and support that will help me reach my full potential.
Today we were given a chance to meet Ms. McKinney which coordinates The office of student engagement and leadership. She taught us how to identify our leadership style, encouraged us about college involvement, getting a mentor, creating goals, etc.
I learned a lot in this scholarship session, college is not just about going to your classes, you need to engage in activities and be involved.
I was able to learn a lot from this session and I learned more about my own style. Being able to communicate with others about our learning styles really helped me realize that I have a lot in common with others and that I’m not alone. I also learned more about mentorship and other tips from peers.
It's important to identify my qualities and to work hard in order to make my qualities stronger.
