Participating in The Breakfast Club event shifted my perspective on service and gratitude. The morning began with simple yet meaningful tasks, such as preparing and serving breakfast, registering individuals for showers, and distributing hygiene items to unhoused members of the Miami community. These actions reminded me of the importance of addressing basic needs with dignity and care. I grew up in a religious environment, so some of these values resonated with me and inspired me to help.

While I initially attended the event to fulfill community service hours for my classes, a brief interaction shifted my mindset. A singular "thank you" from one of the individuals I helped struck a chord—it wasn’t just gratitude; it carried depth and sincerity. The man shared an impactful observation during our conversation: "You don’t get enough of those thank-yous." He explained how many people take things for granted and often forget the importance of expressing gratitude for small gestures. It reminded me that volunteers are not obligated to help, yet they choose to offer their time and effort selflessly. His words left me reflecting on how essential it is to stay grounded in appreciation for giving and receiving kindness.

This interaction pinned my experience, shifting the focus from self-benefit to the true purpose of service. It became clear that volunteer work is not just about fulfilling requirements but about creating meaningful connections and moments of support. Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to participate. This event taught me that service transcends tangible tasks, becoming a way to share humanity and cultivate gratitude.
