I typed up two full pages from the March 8, 1940 Genesee News, and it took more focus than I expected. Everything had to be word for word, so I couldn’t skim or fix anything, even the old spellings and printed typos. What I liked most was the small stuff: card party scores, who visited whose house on Sunday, and a surprise birthday party which made the town feel real. The ads were fun too, with Kleenex for ten cents and “electric ranges” as the new thing. It made me appreciate that someone has to type this all out for these everyday details to be saved.
