About
Volunteers will be assigned a Head Start classroom along side with a teacher, teacher assistant to engage children in interactive play and hands-on activities. Volunteers can choose their hours they would like to serve in the classroom. Classroom hours are 9-3:15 Mon-Thurs and Friday 9-12.
As a volunteer, we want you to be actively engaged in the children playing. As a child is playing you can extend their learning by asking them open ended questions, boosting their vocabulary by naming the items they are playing with, encouraging cooperative play through communication and sharing with others, and redirecting behaviors when necessary. Each classroom is set up into learning centers - housekeeping, blocks, art, books, sand/water table, large group time, table toys, science/discovery, writing area, games, music, technology-based activities, and other planned activities - offers the children opportunities to develop new skills. As a child is playing in the different centers, here are the skills and concepts they are developing: Language, Fine Motor, Skills/Grasping, Hand/Eye Coordination, Shapes, Science, Social Skills, Emergent Literacy , and Numbers
Volunteers need to complete an application, food handlers permit, two step TB test and agree to a background check.
