Join Us in Honoring History: Mt. Carmel Beautification and Restoration Project
In the heart of Memphis, lies Mount Carmel Cemetery, a sacred resting place rich in history and heritage. Established in 1847, this historical Black cemetery holds the remains of over 3,400 individuals, including notable African Americans whose contributions shaped our community and our nation. Among them is Tom Lee, a Memphis hero commemorated with a million-dollar downtown statue, yet whose burial site is hidden beneath overgrowth.
This December, we invite you to join Mt. Carmel Ally, a nonprofit dedicated to the restoration and preservation of this cherished space, as we come together to honor the legacy of those interred. By clearing the grounds and revitalizing the cemetery, we aim to transform it into a vibrant community learning space—a place where history lives and inspires future generations.
Let’s come together to preserve the dignity of this historical site and the stories it holds. Your hands, your time, and your heart can make a difference in restoring this sacred ground.
