About
We will hike the Copperfield Nature Trails to identify invasive plants. I will show you how to record your observations in iNaturalist so you can continue observing on your own. We will use this information to locate the areas in greatest need of work. I expect we will see:
- Glossy privet (Ligustrum lucidum). We will learn how to tell it from spring herald (Forestiera pubescens), silktassel (Garrya lindheimeri), roughleaf dogwood (Cornus drummondii) and various other native plants.
- Quihou's privet (Quihoui privet). We will learn how to tell it from evergreen yaupon (Ilex vomitoria) and possumhaw (Ilex decidua).
- Chinese pistache (Pistacia chinensis). We will learn to tell it from western soapberry (Sapindus drummondii) and flameleaf sumac (Rhus lanceolata).
- Chinaberry (Melia azederach). We will learn how to tell it from western soapberry, especially when the tree is leafless.
- Nandina (Nandina domestica).
I will bring tools to uproot saplings of these species so you can test them out. I will provide leather work gloves, but you may bring your own comfy work gloves if you wish.
Dress for the weather, but keep in mind that the trail will be rugged and uneven. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes would be wise. They will be required if you wish to get back into the brush.
Bring a full water bottle. Stay hydrated.
See you there!

Parking Details
There is limited parking available in the park, so it would help if some of us were to park at one of the other trailheads and hike to the park.
