About

Community Partner: The Lemon Project in Williamsburg, VA. The Lemon Project is a dynamic attempt to rectify wrongs perpetrated against African Americans by William & Mary, both through action and inaction. This program contributes to and encourages education regarding the 300-year relationship between African Americans and the College, and builds bridges between the university and the greater Williamsburg area.

Social Issue: History of racism at William & Mary

Activities: Participants will learn about specific topics and engage in service related to this year’s Lemon Project symposium theme. This year’s theme is “At the Root: Exploring Black Life, History, and Culture”. Participants will take part in lectures, workshops, and research related to this theme, and they will present their findings at the Annual Lemon Project Symposium in late March.

Housing: Participants will stay together in the Wesley Foundation house near campus, and will need to bring a sleeping bag or sheets and a blanket, towel, and be prepared to sleep on a floor or couch.

Overview: In a Branch Out Alternative Break, you will join a team and engage in service-based learning to make an impact while connecting with new people and developing skills in issue-based action. Our vision is to create a community of active and educated individuals dedicated to the pursuit of social justice. We aim to grow as active citizens, together.

Our teams work with a community partner organization to address a particular social justice issue. Led by our Site Leaders, you will engage in pre-trip education and orientation about your Break's focus issue and community, and you will engage in training to prepare for action. During your break, you'll work with your partner on specific projects  and goals, and critically reflect on your action throughout. Following your break, you and your fellow Breakers will lead a reorientation effort, bringing what you've learned and your passion for the social issue back to Williamsburg.

Breaks are free for all students.

Each Break description also includes content warnings; we prioritize and value our participants' safety and comfort, so please do not hesitate to reach out to our team with any questions or concerns about potential triggers or accommodations. This break will include in-depth discussion and learning about topics of race and racism.

Applicants must view a mandatory info session in order to apply to our Alternative Breaks. More information about Branch Out Alternative Breaks' organization, partnerships, and opportunities can be found on our Linktree.
