About
Join us on Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the University of Arkansas’ Cato Springs property to collect the seed of Big Bluestem plants.
This is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in learning all about seed collection and its relationship to restoring and enhancing the 10-acre oak savanna hillside. Situated along Razorback Road and part of the trail connection to the Razorback Greenway, the grove is one of the few remaining post oak savannas in Fayetteville. The effort will be led by Jennifer Ogle, collections manager of the UA herbarium and all-around Arkansas native plant expert, and include free sandwiches.
Please meet at the Cato Springs Research Center, located at 1475 W Cato Spring Rd, Fayetteville, AR. After you enter the parking lot, drive around the front of the building and around to the west side and park in any open space (no parking permit required).
We will be working in the full sun and in rugged terrain not without some brambles and thorns … you’ll want to bring a hat and wear your hard pants and boots, or at least sturdy sneakers! Please bring your own water bottle.
We’ll provide gloves, tools, and training. And burritos!
Seed cannot be collected while wet, so this event will be delayed if it's raining. We will try to announce any cancellation as soon as we're sure of rain.
This project is a partnership between the U of A and NWA Trailblazers with the support of Ozark Ecological Restoration Inc., City of Fayetteville, UARK Herbarium, and The Nature Conservancy.
