About

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Volunteer Role: Case Manager
Position Summary:
Volunteer Case Managers support participants navigating complex life transitions by offering structured, trauma-informed guidance across housing, documentation, service coordination, and emotional readiness. This role is not about fixing—it’s about facilitating clarity, pacing, and trust. Case Managers help participants understand next steps, track progress, and flag risks, while maintaining strict boundaries and emotional safety.

๐Ÿ” Key Responsibilities
1. Participant Engagement & Emotional Pacing
  • Build rapport through consistent, nonjudgmental presence and trauma-informed listening
  • Conduct structured check-ins to assess progress, readiness, and unmet needs
  • Reinforce emotional pacing—never rushing disclosures, decisions, or breakthroughs
  • Help participants reflect on patterns, choices, and goals without judgment or pressure
2. Service Coordination & Documentation
  • Assist participants in navigating housing applications, ID recovery, benefits enrollment, and resource referrals
  • Track participant milestones using emotionally safe, operationally clear documentation
  • Flag unresolved risks, behavioral concerns, or eligibility gaps for staff review
  • Maintain confidentiality and avoid speculation or off-script messaging
3. Boundary Modeling & Program Reinforcement
  • Clarify program expectations, eligibility criteria, and consequences without shame or coercion
  • Avoid offering personal advice, financial support, or emotional caretaking
  • Reinforce readiness indicators and support participants in identifying next steps
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure alignment with program integrity and safety standards
4. Safety, Supervision & Debriefing
  • Follow all safety protocols, including incident reporting and decompression check-ins
  • Request support when navigating emotional fatigue, role ambiguity, or participant dysregulation
  • Participate in team debriefs and ongoing training to maintain trauma-informed fluency
  • Uphold participant dignity in all documentation, communication, and engagement
โš ๏ธ Risks & Realities of the Role
  • Emotional exposure: Hearing trauma disclosures, grief, systemic harm, or behavioral volatility
  • Boundary testing: Participants may seek personal advice, favors, or emotional over-engagement
  • Role ambiguity: Pressure to “fix,” “motivate,” or “perform” beyond the scope of case management
  • Vicarious trauma: Internalizing participant distress or feeling responsible for their outcomes
  • Documentation pressure: Balancing emotional nuance with operational clarity
  • Situational discomfort: Navigating silence, resistance, or emotionally charged transitions
โœ… Ideal Volunteer Traits
  • Emotionally grounded and self-aware
  • Comfortable with structured engagement and emotionally layered conversations
  • Skilled in nonjudgmental listening and reflective dialogue
  • Able to maintain boundaries and avoid over-functioning
  • Committed to dignity, safety, and trauma-informed engagement
  • Willing to ask for support and participate in decompression practices
๐Ÿ•’ Time Commitment & Supervision
  • Shifts typically range from 2–4 hours per participant, with flexible scheduling
  • Minimum commitment: 6–10 hours per month preferred
  • Volunteers must attend trauma-informed case management training and shadow at least one session before serving independently
  • Supervised by the Participant Services Coordinator or designated staff lead
  • Ongoing coaching, decompression, and peer support provided
