I tabled outside for Texas 4000 to help promote for our free skin cancer screenings that we are hosting this week. As a part of our pillar of knowledge, we host skin cancer screenings each semester to help promote education about the importance of using sun screen to help prevent exposure that can lead to skin cancer, which is the most common form of cancer, but also the most preventable. It is also used to talk about how early detection can be very crucial to increase likelihood of easy treatment and successful remission. This can be done by going to a doctor and having your skin checked to just make sure that there are no known abnormalties, and if there is then you can catch something early on. It was a great experience to be able to inform people walking to and from class that there was this free option to make sure that everything with their skin is safe.

I helped surpervise a small group of youth that went to help at the free store in Austin. The free store recently has moved buildings, or is in the process of moving to a new building, and they needed help cleaning out the old bilding and taking down the old sign, that they had attempted to paint over. I sweeped and vacuumed the inside, while talking to one of the owners about my future career goals. I then went outside with the rest of the group to help sand down the outside of the building, and wear down the paint that the sign was mad out of so it could be repainted and the side of the building would no longer say Free Store. This was oneof my first times using any kind of saw, and it was a learning curve to figure out how it worked. I also was covered in shavings a long the way, which really made it feel like a job well done. The youth also really enjoyed being able to use some power tools, under supervision of course, and it was fun to see them have fun serving in a way that was different to them.

I volunteered through Texas 4000 by tabling for our recruitment period for the 2018 team. I was able to stand in the West Mall and talk to others about my involvment so far and why I applied for something so crazy. Through that I was able to talk with others about how cancer has effected their lives, whether they were interested in applying or not. We gathered emails as we talked to those who were interested to be able to update them on the application process as it continued. Over the whole month of recruitment we were able to gather over 500 emails, that eventually led to the development of the 90 person, 2018 Texas 4000 team.

I volunteered through Texas 4000 at another trail race that was put on by the Trail Head Running group again. This race was called Creepies and Crawlies and was on a trail that was in Buda, right off of I35. I was stationed at a water stop with music playing. There were two areas that the runners were coming from that we had to point the runner into the direction that they were going. Otherwise we cheered them on as they came. This race was a 5k and a 10k, so we saw the 10k runners twice through our area. It was a joy to be able to cheer them on while also getting to know another Texas 4000 teammate as we waited for the runners to come by. Once they had all come through we walked back to the beginning, picking up the flags that marked the race trail as we went back. It was wet and humid while we were there but it was run non the less cheering on the women that were running in this race.

I volunteered through Texas 4000 at the Austin Marathon. I volunteered the day before at the expo to share information about Texas 4000. We had our table to be able to show off our organization and to be able to promote different events we had coming up. Once of those being the Atlas ride where they could ride the first 25, 50, or 70 miles with the team to send them off to Alaska. At the very least we were able to share our mission to others, furthering our fight against cancer.
The next day I volunteered with Texas 4000 at the first water stop. We gave out a lot of water but because it was so early in, most people kept running past. It was exciting to see my friends that were running and to be able to cheer for them and keep them hydrated. We were done in only three hours since most of the runners came in big groups and had not separated out in the race yet. It was another day that really motivated me to keep pushing in my own running endeavors to be able to get healthier and maybe run in my own half marathon next year.

I volunteered with the 3M Half Marathon. They reached out to our coordinator of Texas 4000 for volunteers. It was last minute, but since I was available I went and helped. We were at the last water stop, which was around mile 10. We filled water cups and made three levels of them on each table. We had tables with water and we had tables with a sports drink called nuun. As the runners came by, we stood on the end of the curb and held out the drinks for the runners to grab. They came in slowly at first, and then came in big groups. It was a competition between each person on who gave out the most cups. It was also motivating to see all these runners so late in the race pushing themselves to finish. After the runners passed us we had to pick up all the cups from the road and sort them between the cups that were recyclable and the cups that were not recyclable. Once everything was cleaned, we were good to go. After the race, I ran three miles back to campus.

I volunteered with Texas 4000 at a race hosted by Trail Head Running called Bruises and Bandages. This run was hosted at a trail where the women that a part of the Trail Head Running group ran either a 5k, 10k, or half marathon. I volunteered with parking at first showing people who were coming from the parking lot where to go to check in and pick up their materials. Once everyone had arrived and the race kicked off, I waited where the half marathon runners would be coming out of their first course to continue on. In this spot I would direct them where to go to continue the second part of their race. This was the same spot where the 5kers and 10kers would be finishing their race and I directed them to where the finish line was. While standing around waiting for the runners to come, I talked with other members and got to know some more of my teammates in Texas 4000. The weather was a lot colder than most of us anticipated and to keep ourselves warm we danced around to the music that was playing. In the end we helped to keep those waiting for their friends that were running entertained and ourselves warm. While being there I was moved by the motivation and shape that these women were in. This run helped me to decide to start running and bettering my health.

Part of the perks of being an OA is NOA selection day. We are a part of choosing the next round of NOAs. This was my first year being on the choosing and evaluating side of selection day and it was such an interesting experience. I chose to volunteer to work all day because I was available and because I really wanted to be a part of the whole process. For the first half I was in the group interview. and so I had so many people depending on the group that I was evaluating, usually around 3, for the exercise. We were looking at how well they participate and what they contribute to the group process. We ;eave comments about things that we feel are important and then put if we do not recommend, recommend with reservation, recommend, or highly recommend. Then explain why. I found myself being more critical than I imagined I would be, but also found it to be easier to pick out who would make a good OA than I though it would be. The second half I was a group leader so I took a group to each part of the interview. During some off time between stations I was able to talk to them about my experience which was a nice way to reminisce my experience as an OA.

Course Spirit needed for CASA Superhero Run

The purpose of this event if for people to come together and to fund raise money for CASA and support children who have been abused. The motto of the run is that every child needs a hero but every abused child needs a super hero. Each runner was dressed in some sort of costume and it was an amazing feeling to see all of these families come together and bring their pets to support others. Everyone running so energetic, it was almost like they were giving me the spirit I was supposed to be giving them! I also dressed up which made it all the more fun! It was a good way to start off a morning. Cheering on others as they help others and really being the super heroes, big or small, that these children need.
