Students are needed to serve with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the Community Economic Development Center. Volunteers will be trained and certified to help community members with their tax return preparation in multiple roles, including as screeners, intake, preparers, quality reviewers, translators and benefit advocates.
Organization Description:
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a strategic partnership between the Charlton College of Business, the Leduc Center for Civic Engagement, and the Community Economic Development Center (CEDC). The initiative was designer by the IRS to promote and support free tax preparation services for the underserved, targeting low-to-moderate income individuals, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English-speaking who need assistance in preparing their tax returns.
Student volunteers, certified by the IRS through a training program, provide free basic income tax return preparation to individuals in the local communities who qualify for the program
The Community Economic Development Center (CEDC) helps new immigrant families and long-term residents find their way to economic opportunities through skill-building, providing access to critical resources, and by promoting neighborhood revitalization. The CEDC is a dynamic resource center for area residents, many of whom are immigrants, and who often need a hand to become more self-sufficient and active participants in the local economy. We support entrepreneurship. public advocacy and revitalization of the neighborhood.
Time Commitment:
Students must be able to make a 120-hour commitment from early February through mid-April, and be able to volunteer at least two days during the week.
