Hurricanes Harvey and Irma Relief

Open Opportunity

About

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey's devastating impact on Texas, and potential impacts of Hurricane Irma, the Monarch community has been eager and willing to support aid and recovery efforts. There are a variety of ways for individuals to make a contribution to Hurricane Relief.

Physical Goods Donations

There are several donation bins in the South Mall of Webb Center to collect goods for a variety of organizations. These goods have been specifically identified as an item of need by the organization. If there's something different you'd like to donate, please utilize the organizations' Amazon wishlists to ensure your donation will be needed and effective for relief efforts! You can even order right from Amazon and have the items shipped directly.

Hurricane Irma needs will be updated as they become known.

The items we are collecting are:

Lysol Disinfecting Wipes - Benefiting the American Red Cross
Diapers, Training Pull Ups, & Baby Wipes - Benefiting the Texas Diaper Bank
Tall Kitchen Drawstring Bags, Hand Sanitizer - Benefiting the Houston Humane Society
Peanut Butter - Benefiting the Corpus Christi Food Bank

The Women's Soccer team is collecting nonperishable goods at their game at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 15th, which they will bring to Florida for their away game to Boca Raton. Come to watch the match, support the team, and donate nonperishable food for Irma victims.

Monetary Donations

Supporting Disaster Relief Organizations

Providing funds to organizations after a disaster is often the most effective way to support relief efforts, because it allows them to purchase items that are most needed in recovery.

Disaster relief organizations accepting donations for Hurricane victims include:

The American Red Cross
The United Way

Supporting Colleges and Universities

Many colleges and universities have a large number of students and faculty/staff who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The University of Houston has a UH Cougar Emergency Fund to support students who find themselves with hardship as a result of the storm. To donate, visit the page and indicate your donation is for "Harvey Relief."

In addition, Athletics and Conference USA are fundraising for Rice University students and faculty/staff who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey. To donate, visit: http://www.youcaring.com/CUSACARES

Blood Donations

The hurricanes have caused an immediate need for blood donations from all blood types. The next blood drives on campus will be:
September 18, 10AM - 4PM, Hampton/Newport News Room
September 29, 10AM - 4PM, Bloodmobile on Kaufman Mall
October 3, 10AM - 4PM, Hampton/Newport News Room

Additionally, you can visit the American Red Cross website to enter your zip code and find a donation site close to you.

Record Your Impact

Once you've identified the best way for you to make an impact, be sure to record your impact on GivePulse.

To record, click the "Add Impact" button on the right side of your screen on the event page.

Under "Impact Type & Measurement," you can select the type of donation you have made, including Time (by volunteering), Money, or Goods.

Faculty/Staff are also encouraged to record their impact through the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign. After making a donation to a CVC approved charity (The American Red Cross, Americares, or the Salvation Army), be sure to save your confirmation screen and visit http://www.cvc.virginia.gov/directgiving.html to record your donation to count towards ODU's CVC goal.
