The Penguin Pantry and Career Closet are vital resources for our campus community. They exist to assist ALL members of our YSU Family who are working to make ends meet, in-between jobs, or simply in need of assistance. Our purpose is to provide occasional food and other necessities to those who need this kind of assistance. We are seeking dedicated and passionate students to join us in supporting the daily operations of the pantry. As a volunteer, you will play a crucial role in making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.

Responsibilities:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (Behind-the-Scenes Helpers)

  • Help prepare pantry for open hours by cleaning and organizing
  • Prepare orders for pick-up
  • Vacuum, clean surfaces, fold clothes, and fix hangers to maintain a welcoming and organized space
  • Sort incoming donations and record in log book
  • Check food items for expiration dates to ensure quality and safety
  • Assist with any other tasks necessary to ensure the pantry is well-prepared for open hours

Wednesday (Frontline Support)

  • Interact with pantry users and provide a welcoming and friendly atmosphere
  • Assist users with intake forms and orders, ensuring a smooth and efficient process
  • Provide support with clothing selection, help users find the items they need with care and compassion
  • Be a friendly and approachable presence
  • Offer assistance, answer questions, and make everyone feel comfortable

All Volunteers:

  • Follow the daily checklist for a comprehensive list of responsibilities
  • Greet students, staff, faculty, and guests with a warm and friendly attitude, create a welcoming environment for all
  • Maintain pantry cleanliness and organization by rotating out expired foods, checking clothing for imperfections, and keeping the space tidy
  • Restock shelves and racks with overstock products to ensure a well-stocked and accessible pantry for all
  • Prepare orders according to request

Volunteers should report to the pantry at the time of their shift. If the pantry is locked, please go to DeBartolo Hall 301 to request access from a staff member.
