About

This module provides opportunities to engage in the movement for racial justice. Participants choose from a variety of "Get Woke" community-based educational programs that provide information about the history of racial violence in Florida and the ways social systems and institutions promote inequity and racial oppression. These include The Rosewood Story, an interactive exhibit hosted by the Arthur Lee McDuffie Center for Racial Justice, and the South Florida People of Color Unity 360 dialogue series. Participants will then "Get Involved" by contributing to Dream Defenders campaigns to reform public spending and to uphold the right to demonstrate peacefully in the State of Florida.

Say Her Name! Working for Social Justice at the Intersection of Race and Gender Thursday, February 11th, 4:00-5:30

Women of color have been disproportionately affected by police violence, but their stories receive little media attention compared to their male counterparts. The Say Her Name! movement seeks to make the fight for racial justice more inclusive of the experiences of women. The campaign brings to light the stories of women of color who have been killed by police and have experienced gender-specific forms of police violence. An all-women panel includes professors, community organizers, and gender and racial justice activists.
