About

Home Mentoring Program

We are seeking motivated, compassionate volunteers to take part in our Home Mentoring Program. As a mentor, you can offer a resettled refugee student in the Cleveland area much needed academic support, greater confidence in English language skills, and new windows into American culture and the community.

Volunteer mentors are matched with a refugee student in grades K-8 and commit to spending two hours per week for one year practicing language skills and providing one-on-one tutoring and mentorship. Mentors play a critical role in the lives of these newcomer students, empowering them to successfully navigate social and academic challenges in their new community, and find a sense of belonging.

Mentoring takes place at the student's home, with opportunities to plan outings for cultural and community exploration such as the zoo, the library, the park, and more. Mentors are also invited to participate in creative and social programming during the year for students and their families in collaboration with staff and other volunteer mentors. You will be supported by the Refugee Response staff, a network of mentors, and have access to a resource library and mentor portal full of information.

Why you should Mentor:

Our mentors come from all different backgrounds, each with their own unique skillset. The common thread is their commitment to making our newest community members feel welcome. Mentors have the opportunity to positively impact the lives of refugee families through the simple gift of their time. By being a consistent and positive presence in the lives of your mentee you help them build confidence and truly become a part of the community that they now call home.

Mentors will have the opportunity to discover the cultural practice and rich customs of families from countries as far as Burma, the Congo, Somalia, and others. Mentors also find that their social and cultural circles expand through participation in community potlucks, mentor socials, workshops, and other cultural and educational programming throughout the year.
